South Carolina Philharmonic Early 2012 Highlights

The South Carolina Philharmonic has been a premier performing arts group for nearly 50 years, entertaining audiences in Columbia and the midlands region. Since its formation in 1964, the South Carolina Philharmonic has grown to become one of the leading orchestras in the Southeast. The Music Director is Morihiko Nakahara, who also serves as the resident conductor of the Spokane Symphony. Here are some of the highlights from upcoming concerts.
February 11 will be the Philharmonics annual Valentines weekend program, with Love Songs as its theme. The evening will begin with Prelude and Liebestod from Richard Wagners opera, Tristan und Isolde. The second selection will be Suite from Der Rosenkavalier, Strauss lighthearted comic opera. The program concludes with Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade, a symphonic suite based on Tales of the Arabian Nights. Ticket prices for this romantic evening range from $23-$53.
March 24 will be an evening of music by prominent 20th century Russian composers. Audiences will hear Prokofievs Overture on Hebrew Themes, followed by Shostakovichs Symphony No. 9. Featured pianist Martina Filjak will perform Rachmaninoffs popular Piano Concerto No. 3. The Croatian pianist was the winner of the 2009 Cleveland International Piano Competition and is now in demand as a performer all over the world. Tickets for the evening will range from $17-$47.
The concert on April 28 will feature musicians, soloists, and choral groups from the state of South Carolina. The evening will begin with Edward Harts violin concerto, Under an Indigo Sky. Violinist Yuriy Bekker from the Charleston Symphony will be the special guest performer. Beethovens Symphony No. 9, Ode to Joy, will be sung by several area choruses. Tickets for the performance will range from $23-$53.
Tickets for the South Carolina Philharmonic may be purchased online or at Capitol Tickets at the Carolina Coliseum Box Office. Ticket holders may attend the free pre-concert Classical Conversations before each Master Series concert. These short but informative lectures will help the audience gain insight into the evenings performance.
The South Carolina Philharmonic performs at the Koger Center for the Arts, located on the campus of the University of South Carolina at 1051 Greene Street in Columbia. The Koger Centers excellent acoustics and seating capacity make it an ideal venue for concerts. Free parking is available after 6pm on streets around the Koger Center. There are $5 parking lots behind the Carolina Coliseum. Parking is also available for $5 in the Discovery Garage off Park Street.
